The Desolation of Edom

Obadiah and Jeremiah pronounced doom on Edom for gloating over Jerusalem's fall in 587 BC, declaring that 'the house of Esau' would leave no remains. Edom's kingdom vanished as a sovereign, separately-named nation: displaced from its highlands by the Nabataeans, absorbed into Judea under John Hyrcanus in the late second century BC, and extinguished as a distinct people when the Idumeans fell alongside Jerusalem in AD 70.
