The Destruction of Nineveh

Nahum's oracle pronounced Nineveh's total, fiery destruction. A Babylonian-Median coalition burned the Assyrian capital to the ground in 612 BC, ending the empire that had dominated the ancient Near East for a century. Two independent sources confirm it: the contemporary Babylonian Chronicle records the siege and sack, and archaeologists have uncovered thick ash and burn layers across the city's mound at Kuyunjik.
